How Does Underwear Contribute to Microfiber Pollution?

Most of the time, we talk about the experience of wearing underwear. But what about once you’re ready to retire them? The hard truth is not so comfortable.

In fact, approximately 11 million pounds of underwear end up in landfills every day. Most underwear is made of synthetic fibers, like nylon and elastic, that take hundreds of years to decompose. In the process, they contribute to synthetic microfiber pollution, which is a huge—and growing—problem.

In one study of aquatic samples in both freshwater and ocean water, about 90% of the debris found was from microfibers. Another found that 85% of debris on shorelines worldwide was from microfibers. What’s more, this pollution may bioaccumulate as it moves up the food chain.
