DAY IN BRIEF: PIPPA FRAUMENI, ABSTRACT ARTIST
When’s the last time you went out on a Thursday? Abstract artist Pippa Fraumeni thinks it may be time to bring back the age-old college tradition.
After building a career in fashion, she moved from NYC to Houston, where she discovered a passion for painting as she began decorating her house (check out her work at pippafraumeni.com!). Now, she juggles her business, her kids’ three schedules, and the occasional girls’ night.
Even outside of painting, her interests lie in the aesthetic. “I love interiors, antiques, old movies—TCM is my favorite instagram follow,” she says. And in the rare moments she’s not working or in mom mode, she says she’s become “obsessed” with Mahjong and needlepointing,” though she admits “I don't have time to do either.”
Though she finds beauty in all things, Pippa says, “I will always choose a trip over an object,” and admits “I'm happiest at the beach having a no-shower happy hour at sunset.” Which brings us back to her favorite day, when she makes time for both work and play. Ahead, find out how Pippa keeps everyone on track—and kicks back—in our latest Day in Brief.
Uwila Warrior: What is your favorite day of the week?
Pippa Fraumeni: Thursday.
UW: How is that day different from the others?
Pippa: I love Thursday because you have the promise of the weekend ahead of you, and I like to think of it as the kickoff to the weekend. I still jokingly call Thursday “College Night,” and if I'm going to get together with my girlfriends, this is usually the night. Weekends, in general, are for family in our house so if I'm going out solo it's on a Thursday. As you get older I think you appreciate the power of laughing your head off with good friends and taking off your Mom, Wife, Caretaker hats. Then hopefully after a fun night with friends, you have a quiet Friday and get to ease into the weekend.
UW: How does the day start for you?
Pippa: I wake up at 5:30 and take care of emails and back office part of my business. I am not a morning workout person, but I am a “sit in silence with my coffee and laptop” person. Between 6:30 and 8:30 it's a race to get three kids off to three different schools. By 9, I am back home and squeeze in a quick 30 minute workout and paint in my studio until it's time to pick up my littlest at 12.
UW: What about the afternoon?
Pippa: During nap time I pick up my house, which is usually a disaster by this point. Then I'm on kid duty running carpool and taking them to their activities. I love having three kids because I am a logistics freak—my favorite thing is when three people need to be five different places at once.
UW: What does a perfect evening for you look like?
Pippa: By 5:30 it's dinner, then wind down into bedtime. Once the kids are in bed at 7 I slip out and hopefully head to a fun dinner with some girlfriends. Hopefully at some point during the day I've found time to shower, do my makeup, and pick out a cute outfit but not always.
UW: What habits or moments during the day give you strength?
Pippa: Getting up before my kids, taking time to work out, trying to keep the house tidy—having an organized environment really helps my mental state.
UW: How do you power down at night?
Pippa: I wish I could say I meditate, but my husband and I love to watch trash TV. We are currently on Below Deck Sailing Yacht and it's as close to turning off one's brain as possible. Then I love to get into bed and read for 3.5 minutes before I need to turn off the light.
