It’s well documented that we’re underwear obsessed over here, so we’re probably replacing our old undies at a higher rate than the average woman. But, we should all be replacing our underwear on a more regular basis than we probably do. Beyond it being a playful and cute item of clothing, it’s in direct contact with sensitive body parts as well as skin and sometimes bodily fluids. It absorbs sweat and comes into contact with bacteria, so it’s a good thing to thoroughly wash in between replacements. Some general rules of thumb for replacing your old underwear to help you maintain a healthy and flattering top drawer…

Replacement Lifecycle

Replacing your underwear is a good habit to get into every 6-12 months. This timeline depends on a few lifestyle factors, like how many pairs your regular rotation includes. Also, ask yourself how often you wear each pair, how frequently you are washing, and of course, the way you’re washing them (including what else they’re washed with).

Having a larger rotation (of say, 20-30 pairs) will last longer than cycling through 10-12 pairs. That said, there are some easy-to-spot signs you’re due for an underwear update. And of course, a gentle reminder here that if your underwear doesn’t fit like it used to, it isn’t performing the way it’s supposed to. Consider it an act of self-care: you deserve underwear that fits well and feels great.

What To Look For:

Fabric Fatigue: When the taut fit you’re used to is suddenly sagging or not staying in place.

Fading and Stains: Human bodies do their thing, and sometimes that takes its toll.

Fabric Breakdown: If material feels sheer or worn, this is a sign its lifespan is limited.

Loose Fit: If your underwear has gotten baggy or slouchy over time, it’s going to migrate and bunch. Let it go!

Discomfort: If it doesn’t fit well, you’re not going to wear it. Find something else!

Misc. Mishaps: Maybe, like this writer, you have an underwear-and-sock thieving dog who leaves holes. This is your permission to replace! (And get a hamper with a lid.)

Establish a Replacement Routine

Underwear is an essential (though it can be fun if you are picking bright colors or cheeky phrases) and like anything worth maintaining, you’ll want to turn it into a habit. Think of it like rotating your tires, swapping in new running shoes, or replacing your toothbrush and plan to do a drawer audit twice a year. Throw out what doesn’t meet your checklist above, restock your favorites, and take the opportunity to try a new style or see what’s new.
