Who Is Diane von Furstenberg?

Diane von Furstenberg is first and foremost an iconic and world-renowned fashion designer. Her luxurious global brand features apparel, handbags, shoes, accessories, and of course, her signature item - the wrap dress.

Diane designed her first dress in 1970, but the famous wrap dress wasn’t created until 1974. Shortly after, it took the world by storm. The incredible success of the classy and timeless wrap dress led Newsweek to name Diane von Furstenberg “the most marketable woman since Coco Chanel” just two years later.

After taking a brief hiatus from the fashion industry in the 80s, Diane later came back in full force and her brand is now more popular than ever. She’s been worn by celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and political figures including Michelle Obama.

Her powerful influence and impact on the world of fashion led her to be chosen as president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Diane von Furstenberg has been named the “most powerful woman in fashion” by Forbes Magazine, and one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people. She is married to Barry Diller and has two children.

3 Reasons We Love Her

  • Diane’s history is both inspiring and empowering. She is a Belgian-born immigrant to the United States, and her first job was as an assistant to a fashion photographer. Her mother, a survivor of the Holocaust, always taught Diane that “fear is not an option.” She is living proof that hard work and determination can lead to success.

  • How could we not love Diane for her genius in coming up with the wrap dress? This waist-accentuating, curve-hugging dress is both comfortable and appropriate for any occasion. It showcases a classy, low-cut neckline and a feminine tie at the waist. It’s such a simple concept, but we love how flattering it is on every body type.

  • Diane is a strong advocate of women in leadership. She spearheaded the “DVF Awards” which are presented each year to four female leaders who exhibit strength and courage while promoting women’s causes. She also was a spokesperson for the Ban Bossy campaign, and a board member of Vital Voices.
